Giving Back to Our Community: A Summer of Social Impact

“The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”

– Coretta Scott King

As a company with a long history in Lawrence, we truly believe in this quote and are continuously looking for ways to give back to our community. We serve our social impact statement with actions, not just words. This summer, we launched some new and exciting community initiatives which included team volunteering, corporate donations and pro bono print and marketing services.

Badge of honor

Early this year, the Girl Scouts of America released 30 new badges in environmental stewardship, space science, robotics and other scientific disciplines to help girls create positive change in their communities. Because Allen Press has been a staple in scientific publishing for many years, we proudly donated to Lawrence’s local Girl Scouts chapter to help promote the importance of girls interested in STEM.

The monthly donation gives local girls the opportunity to explore activities in science and technology, business and economic literacy, outdoor adventures and community service. Allen Press is committed to supporting girls like these become leaders for themselves and for their community.

Setting the “benchmark”

In addition to donating to the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, Allen Press has signed up to participate in the to Van Go Benchmark Program. The non-profit organization is an arts-based social service that helps at-risk youths aged 14-24.

The Benchmark Program pairs a local business with a youth artist to design and create a one-of-a-kind bench for the community. Over the years, this program has resulted in over 350 custom benches. Our bench will be produced next summer over the course of eight weeks. We can’t wait to get started!

A stick(l)er in raising awareness

Allen Press has teamed up with the Willow Domestic Violence Center in support of their efforts to create a safe place for women and children who are victims of abuse. Since opening in 1976, The Willow serves women and children of domestic abuse in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson Counties. Every year, the Center fields almost 2,700 crisis and referral calls and houses between 250 and 300 adults and children.

In order to help further promote The Willow’s programs and message, we are proud to donate pro bono printing and design services to this wonderful organization. Allen Press printed a direct mail postcard to announce an upcoming Willow event and also designed a sticker that will help raise awareness about domestic violence within the local community.

Lunch is on us

Education is an important part of our social impact statement. With the school year underway, Allen Press stepped up to support the kids of four local public schools by paying off all overdue lunch accounts. This is just a small step to help local children and families get the resources they need to be successful.

Additionally, six Allen Press team members volunteered their time to help pack backpacks for the Salvation Army’s Back 2 School Supply Drive. Many organizations and members of the community generously donated money and goods to help get underprivileged families the educational tools and supplies needed to successfully perform in the classroom. A sneaker for a cause

Allen Press also donated to the I Promise School in Akron, Ohio. This innovative, one-of-a-kind school is the flagship program of the LeBron James Family Foundation organization. Read more about our donation to the school here.

Making the world a better place

It’s through these initiatives that we support the Lawrence community, uplift underrepresented people and kids and push to make the world a better place. We hope that through our donations and volunteering efforts we are not only serving the great community in which Allen Press resides, but also helping those afar.
